About me
I am an assistant professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State. My research group focuses on building machine learning strategies to accurately understand how metals interact with biological molecules. The lab is actively working on >20 metals through various cross-disciplinary projects. We focus on understanding HOW biomolecules use chemistry and geometry (proteins, and carbohydrates) to detect and attract metals towards them. This finds application in industrial biotechnology, critical mineral recovery, human and animal health.I received my PhD in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University, in 2019 with Prof. Costas Maranas. During my PhD, I built optimization algorithms for modify nature-based biomolecules into biomolecules that can help us build drugs, fuels, and green chemicals. Next, I was a postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Peter Sorger in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. Here I developed LLMs for biology to understand the role of drugs and proteins in pain and cancer therapy.
